[The LGDM Politics Show] Chile's Ghost

A lot of complaints about President Bush’s foreign policy are that it does nothing but cause the world to hate us. Most of this assertion is based on the Iraq war, handling of the UN, standoffish “diplomacy,” and our inadequate funding in foreign aid. While true, it ignores the fact that our country has done most of the same things for the last fifty years. Some examples would be the establishment of current IMF policy, the Vietnam War, and how we have controlled debate in the UN. To paraphrase Noam Chomsky, the direction of our policy has been the same, but this time under Bush it has been placed on steroids.

Over the past few days the repercussions of our policy were exhibited with the riots preceding the death of former Chilean dictator Pinochet. The death of former leaders in our country is pretty docile compared to other countries. Several thousand supporters of Pinochet marched and when they noticed the journalist covering the event they started throwing bottled water and cursed at them for their “unfavorable” opinions on the dictatorship. A riot ensued, which in turn started another riot form protestors of the supporters. The man has been out of power for sixteen years, and people have acted like he was recently assassinated.

We cannot forget that the seventeen years of dictatorship was created by the same foreign policy that we have run for years. Pinochet gained and sustained his power just because we had a few presidents that felt that South America would be better if it had a country with a privatized economy.

Most of what had unfolded in Chile should be understood as an example of our backward foreign policy of short-sited economic gains. We make the untrue connection of believing that because there are free markets that democracy will ensure. Both Kissinger and Nixon believed that if Allalentie was in power then he would start a domino effect of “socialist” governments. This fear of a soviet block just south of America is the same nonsense that brought us the war in Vietnam.

The reason behind these riots is something deeply rooted in their consciousness. It’s difficult for us to imagine emotions from their own 9-11 (September 11, 1973), but I’ll try to give you smidgen of truth.

Pretend that we just recently elected a new president with an overwhelming majority of the vote with a populist agenda. Then, a few days before he would be sworn in, the White House was bombed (financed and planned by a powerful foreign country), and a general was placed in power to push a totally different political/economic agenda. A dictatorship would quickly develop and a police state would be implemented resulting in a couple million murdered. A lot of resentment would be directed toward the government, but even more would be placed upon the power foreign country.

The torture that we put Chile through twenty year ago still resonates today, and it will take even more years for the wounds to heal. Much of what is happening under the guise of anti-terrorist measures by our government is creating even more wounds which I fret will never heal.

[The LGDM Politics Show] Illegal Immigrants Don't Cost Us Anything

The rhetoric runs pretty high when most Americans discuss the issue of illegal immigration. All too often, from both sides of the political debate, there is the agreement that undocumented workers cost us tax dollars. What rational is this belief based on? Most of the studies that I have read, including this latest one from Texas, indicate otherwise. In its conclusion it states;

The Comptroller’s office estimates the absence of the estimated 1.4 million undocumented immigrants in Texas in fiscal 2005 would have been a loss to our Gross State Product of $17.7 billion. Also, the Comptroller’s office estimates that state revenues collected from undocumented immigrants exceed what the state spent on services, with the difference being $424.7 million.

I remember when I was going to school in San Diego that this rhetoric was completely radicalized to the point of comparing illegal immigration to rape and murder.

[The LGDM Politics Show] Democratic Party Says No To Mandatory Nap Time

Last year the 109^th congress only worked 103 days. I don’t know if this is good news or bad news, but contrary to popular belief our congressional leaders only worked two and a half days a week. The twelve years that the republicans held power in the house they only spent half their time in Washington D.C. working. What did they do with the extra two and a half days? Campaigning? Accepting bribes from lobbyists? Taking naps? Playing video games? With the deregulation of the FCC, changes in Medicare, elimination of welfare, drafting the Patriot Act among other things it’s pretty hard to imagine what other horrible things they could accomplish if they actually tried. With all things considered I am kind of glad that they only worked at half the pace.

With the elimination of whole three-week vacations, these politicians are finally starting to come grip of what every American has to deal with. Most parents have to spend five days a week at work with little hope (or desire) of a vacation. One representative complains in the article that she has to figure out how to juggle her time at work to accommodate her daughter’s Girl Scout activates. To her this is an unnecessary inconvenience, but to many Americans it is reality.

It’s pretty sad that the Democratic Party boasts of this change in congressional procedures with the same gusto as raising the minimum wage and making health care affordable. What is even sadder is that we continue to believe that taking time off from work is something that is detrimental to our well-being. All workers have the right to take paid time off from work; lets just hope that our representatives increased workload will force them to change our current work standards.

[The LGDM Politics Show] With The Midterm Elections Over Attention Now Directed Toward '08

With the midterm elections over and most of the congressional committees already named to begin in January, the media has already started a drumbeat for the presidential election. It would be great if they would put more attention to what bills will be proposed within the first hundred hours under a Pelosi run house, but most news media corporations like to discuss idle political gossip. Right now all the talk is a McCain vs. Clinton match up. They use the current poll answers to formula their option that these two are most likely what each party will produce.

On Hardball, Chris Matthews keeps pushing this idea that McCain and Clinton contest is not only likely, but eminent. Almost to the point that everyone besides Giuliani is even given a realistic look. This proposed match up is probably the best bet of occurring, but we are still in the beginning stages of their campaigns. There is always a chance that an unknown to the general public that will emerge into national consciousness. Just think of examples like Howard Dean, Ralph Nader, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton. None of those guys were even remotely known a year before the election.

These obscure politicians should at least be given some air time, or even talked about. It would be even better if the networks would actually discuss third party candidates, or better yet their platform issues. I have little hope that any of these people will get any attention, until they win a huge primary state election.

What also needs to happen is to actually get into depth with each candidate. What they have said, what bills they voted for, any scandals they may be involved in, and what they propose needs to be analyzed with a certain level of scrutiny.

I guess I am up to the task. It may be daunting, not in the sheer number of candidates, but with the amount of scandals and poor decisions made. Whole volumes of texts could be devoted to the illegal and unethical behavior of Newt Gingrich. Even with the issue of voting to give the President ultimate power to declare war includes most of the Democratic Party hopefuls.

Over the course of the year, I hope to give a fair and non-bias perspective on the Presidential candidates to give readers (and podcast listeners) an accurate understanding of these men and women.

St. Nicholas Hates Black People...Santa Also Called Into Question.

While it is true that most of the western world celebrates Christmas, it doesn't mean that it all occurs on the same day. As with most of Northern Europe, Holland has their own version of Santa Claus, St. Nicholas. The story is basally the same; a jolly and wonderful spiritual man secretly gives presents to good children. He bypasses the whole reindeer and North Pole angle, by suddenly appearing and placing treats in the shoes of good children. I can look past the problems that can occur when chocolate is placed in stinky sneakers, but I cannot ignore some problems regarding the role his "helper."

As you can see from the picture that his "helper," named "Peter" is in fact black. The whole folklore, which originated in the 19th century, indicates that he was an evil soul that was tamed by the Christian persuasion of St. Nicholas. Instead of having an elf, this interpretation of Santa Claus is someone who captures an African, gives him the moniker of Zwarte Pieten (Black Pete), and then forces him to give candy to little children.

This is almost the equivalent of having Santa Claus running a sweatshop in the North Pole. There is one explanation that tries to counter this clearly identifiable racism. The position is that St. Nicholas freed poor Peter, and instead of living a life directed by his own liberty, he decided to serve Nicholas. That explanation isn't any better since it indicates that he has no ability to live on his own and needs a white guy to help him, i.e. Nicholas serving a white man's burden.

I know I might just have a glib interpretation of this folktale, but I still cannot get over the fact that white people still celebrate this holiday by putting black ink over their face and skin. Of course, this practice isn't as bad as the blatant racism our country has endured, but for a country that prides itself on tolerance I find it unacceptable.

Finally A Sports League Has Embraced the Net

As far as I know the NHL is now the first sports league to have games available in full for FREE online. The NHL has partnered with Google Video, who will host the videos. The games will be delayed, posted one to two days later, but the partnership will also have classic games also available. For instance, you can now watch the 1967 Stanley Cup Final between Montreal Canadians and Toronto Maple Leafs, game 5 of the 1991 Western Conference Finals between the Minnesota Northstars and the Edmonton Oilers, or the 1974 Stanley Cup Finals between the Boston Bruins and the Philadelphia Flyers.

For myself, as an avid hockey fan, I can now watch Buffalo Sabres games that aren't on Versus (6 games), NBC (1 game), or the CBC (9 games). I can also watch the Chicago Blackhawks now also; I must admit I am quite excited about this not only for myself but for the NHL also. Due to the NHL strike of '04-'05 season, the '05-'06 season saw a lack of television broadcast in the States, and attendence. So with that said anything the NHL can do to boast television coverage, game attendence, and awareness of the sport in the U.S. in particular would be welcome amongst NHL executives, team shareholders, players, and the fans. I can not see this move with Google having any negative effect for the NHL, its teams, and its fans.

I only wish that the NFL, MLB, NBA, and the US soccer league MLS would have their games available for free. Hell I might actually watch a baseball or basketball game if they we're online for free. Having the games for free online would be a great thing for any sport no matter how small the following. For the NFL, MLB, and NBA the following is so big that in reality having the games available for free would most likely not hurt or help them, but for sports such as soccer, rugby, and hockey where the following and awareness is not as broad in the states having games available for free could do nothing but help.

As I watched the MLS Cup Final in Frisco, Texas on ESPN between the Houston Dynamo and the New England Revolution the attendence was at 22,427. This is more than some NFL, MLB, and NBA games, and to think that some people believe that soccer could never succeed in the United States. Soccer is alive and well in the States and can only grow. But like hockey soccer does not have the television broadcast reach like the other major sports leagues. This is where putting your leagues matches free and in full online can truly help you. The reach of the NHL, MLS, and the US Rugby Super League would spread 100 fold if only these leagues can pull their heads out of their ass and embrace the online world. The NHL has done it and I can only hope that the other sports leagues will follow. Hell if we can get them all to do this, the next step is the ability to watch them live from your computer for free.

BMI Just Does not understand Podcasting

The LGDM crew is always looking for new music, but it can be hard sometimes. The scumbags behind the RIAA and other group have made licensing music for use in a podcast a huge pain in the ass. So today I found a link that said that BMI had a special license agreement for podcasters. When you visit the link it is totally confusing. There really is no effort make at all to be effective. Eventually I found a link to fill out an application. I filled it out. I told the little box my name address and lots of other info. Then I told it I make no money on my podcast. It thought for a split second and then spit this out at me

Annual Minimum License Fee	$295.00
Prorated License Fee	$147.50

Yes BMI wants me to pay them about $300 for the privilege for playing their music on my podcast. I make no money at all doing LGDM. And the still want me to pay them $300 to essentially advertise their shit music.

Wow.

Okay so here is a message to mister BMI executive that though he was hip by "embracing" podcasting:

Dinasours must die. Evloution is a bitch my friend. The big labels are little more than parasites stealing from both artists and fans. The time of big "important" record labels is almost over. There is a revolution happening right now. I won't bother explaining it to you. Not only would you never understand it, you have no place in it.
Others out there may want to kiss your ass because you have acknowledged that podacting exists. But I say, "Fuck You BMI."

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, tell the Observer that the online encyclopedias will not bow to Chinese Censors.
Wales said censorship was ' antithetical to the philosophy of Wikipedia. We occupy a position in the culture that I wish Google would take up, which is that we stand for the freedom for information, and for us to compromise I think would send very much the wrong signal: that there's no one left on the planet who's willing to say "You know what? We're not going to give up."'
Wikipedia has been banned in mainland China since October 2005. No specific reason has been given publicly. The consensus is that the Chinese Government is concerned about entries covering Taiwanese independence, Tiananmen Square protests of 1989, among other entries. Despite China's assimilation of capitalist structures, they continue to violently repress human rights. Proscuting jounalists and bloggers has become common place. The free exchange of idea on the internet seem to be a serious concern for the Chinese Communist Leader. Their heavy filtering of the internet has become known as The Great Firewall of China. This filtering has really only been made possible by the cooperation of American corporations like Microsoft, Google , and Yahoo. Each has made special version of their search engines to be used in China. These search engines filter out all content that the Chinese Leaders wish to censor. Hand in hand they cooperate to cover up the brutal reality of the Chinese government. A very good critic of these companies can be found on NewBuster. Allegedly, Yahoo recently took it on step further providing information that led to the arrest of a Chinese blogger. Jimmy Wales should not be alone in his stand for freedom. In this time of faux patriotism, its getting harder and harder to find real patriots that fight for the Ideals of this country. And the most important of those ideals is the free flow of information. Without that democracy means nothing at all. It is sad to see so many corporate leaders putting the dollar before their humanity. Especially when it is a company that I generally respect, like google.

Through the power of rss and/or email, you can pick "monitors" that will track your legislator, bill, or simply special issues. The reason I say it is for the hard core political junkie, is the fact that is real news. No spin, commentary, just the facts. I think a lot of of people would get turned off by that, but for folks like you and me its better than midget kick boxing.

[The LGDM Politics Show] Government Podcasts

Seems like they let just about anyone have a podcast these days. Now the government is jumping on board too. Check out firstgov.gov's podcast page to find them. The same page also link to various official government rss feed, for all you rss junkies out there. On the site you can find links to everything from President George W. Bush's Speeches and Remarks; to Homeland Security Research News from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA); hell even the fucking President's dog, Barney has one. Sadly, it seem that only the executive branch is really represented. The only US court to have a podcast is the 7th Judicial Circuit of the United States.
And as far as I can tell there are no Congressional Podcasts from the government. The closest thing I could find would be cspan's page. But its not a podcast and its in realplayer format. Its nice to see Congress embracing open formats. Hey wait a minute didn't Sen. Maria Cantwell work for RealNetwork. Yes she did. Cspan is great sometimes, but usually its just some Junior Sen. from Kansas yelling about farm subsidies for his soy bean farmers. No one cares, and so they tune out. Podcasting gives the people what they want when they want it. Transparency in government means nothing if the information is so difficult to find, that it essentially might as well be secret.

While I like the steps that the US government has taken in regards to creating podcasts and rss feeds. But they need to do more. There needs to be one site that collects the recordings that already exist and are continually being made and then make them available for the people when they want it. This site would be the Cspan of the internet. Imagine a searchable multidimensional audio archive of every committee hearing, floor debate, official speech, and federal court decisions. You would be able to search and track bills, or follow court cases, or track your congress man's activities like never before. Not only would this be help voters to be more informed, but it would also be an enormous resource for the ever growing movement of citizen journalist.

LGDM is seems to constantly be evolving. I have idea for what possibly may be the next evolution. I not saying that this idea is a good one I just though I should probably though it out there into the abyss for everyone to see. If anyone at all has an opinion please please send me some feed back. So here goes:

The "Problem"

I'm worried the project has a lack of focus. I like being free and being able to talk about anything. But I'm worried that by covering everything from music, to computers, to sports, to politics that we completely lose any definition, and with out definition we could be lost in the sea of blogs and podcasts. I've been trying to figure out what it is that makes us special and why people should take the time to check us out. Most things I've thought of are rather intangible or they are just to complicated to turn into a one liner. And In order to get more people listening to the podcast and more people to read the blog we need some kind of one liner, or tag line. Our purpose here is not to get tons of fans but getting fans is one of goals.

Possible Solution:

Break up the project. By breaking it up by subject we can achieve definition. Each subject would have its own blog and its own podcast and its own purpose. We could have one for music and another for politics, and others for what ever we come up with. Essentially LGDM would become a network of podcasts/blogs. I don't want to get into the technical parts of it but the lawngnomedeathmarch.net site would pretty much look the same. It would not be visibly effected. But it could give people exactly what they what when they actually want it. Maybe just what to hear music or maybe they just fast forward through the music to hear us. And maybe they don't care about us bullshitting about nothing and want to hear our spin on politics or maybe they don't give a fuck about politics and just want to hear the LGDM crew goof off. With this system we can give them exactly what they want. And that's the basic idea behind podcasting right? Giving the listener what they want and cutting out the bullshit. Maybe we are thinking to much like normal radio when we bunch it all together. People could still visit lawngnomedeathmarch.net and see every post for LawnGnomeDeathMarch and listen to every LawnGnomeDeathMarch show. Every flavor of lgdm would be integrated at the main home page. But if someone for example is looking for a show about kick ass new music the can visit the Music site and get just what they want. And if some one is looking for a liberal talk show not hosted by Bizaro world versions of Rush Limbaugh then they can have it. And there would never be a question of does where does this really fit in LGDM. For example, sports. If Jake wants we can have a division just for sports.
And now to summarize by breaking LGDM up we become more marketable and more focused.

Betsy Spivak: The Scratch On My Vinyl Soul

Though I say this about every female vocalist band I review I must say it again; in general, I am not a fan of the female vocalist. But occasionally someone will come through and catch my ear, and Betsy Spivak is one of those people. If you'd like to find a female fronted band/group look no further, Betsy Spivak is your girl.Betsy's humor, good lyrics, and strong music ability provides the listener with music that evokes a smile (ie 'La Grenouille'). Tori Amos only gives frowns, how sad. The songs are upbeat and 'happy' sounding, which is quite nice for a change. Though her songs may not be as 'poetic' as Tori Amos she is still a great lyricist. Betsy is kind of a female Morrissey as you'll hear with her true tongue-in-cheek style lyrics (ie 'Hot Dog Breath', and 'Trailer Trash'). She is more in the school of Smiths style lyric writing, as opposed, to Tori who seems to be more of a Cure style lyricist. And though I adore both these bands the Smiths are much better in my opinion. So I guess, I have to say that Betsy is better than Tori. Which, I think most people would say that this is saying a lot, and they'd be right.Her CD "The Scratch On My Vinyl Soul" is a solid pop album which I'm sure will be a welcome addition to any cd collection (it has mine), and I urge you to buy it, now. If you have any questions about her music, or you just plain like it a lot email her and let her know, and let her know Lawn Gnome Death March sent you.

Junkbox

So I'm not the biggest fan of bands with female vocalist. I don't know why I'm just not. So when a band not only has one female vocalist but two I usually want to shoot myself in the balls, but this band isn't half band. I wouldn't necessarily consider them great but they don't suck either. My favorite song of the three I was able to listen to on their myspace page was 'Shove' but 'Void' wasn't all that bad either. I wasn't really turned on by 'Itchy' but hey at least it didn't make me puke.

Junkload

Junkload's song 'Made in California' could and should be making the rounds on all the local radio stations, but of course it's not because radio hardley ever recognizes really good music. Junkload reminds me ever so slightly of Buckcherry but not enought to make them suck. Junkload reminds me of the Buckcherry who made 'For the Movies'. This is ugly music, for ugly people who love good music.

Ian Kudzinowski

This is really good pop music, which is quite rare to come by these days in a world of Britneys', Christinas', and Shakira's. Ian Kudzinowski's music is part pop, part rock, and part electronica; so when it is mixed all together it creates a great sound. Though he reminds me of Robbie Williams a tad I won't hold that against him (mainly because I'm a big pussy who like Robbie Williams). Mr. Kudzinowski might have been a member of Take That (Robbie Williams group before he went solo), he would have fit in. Well, despite all that Robbie Williams shit I must say that I quite appreciate Ian's music and I can't understand how any real pop fan wouldn't either. Listen to his shit or perish with Frankie Goes to Hollywood you pussy.

John Anaya

Though his official homepage officially sucks; John Anaya officially does not. Although Mr. Anaya looks a little bit like Chino from the Deftones with less hair he doesn't play the same type of music which is a really good thing since they probably wouldn't make great music together anyways. His music is fantastic. Very chill rock, makes me want to be drunk on very cheap shots of vodka while wearing a crappy suit from Value Village. I like his shit. Like I said before I would recommend his myspace page to hear his music; he has the three main songs in full available for listen but also has 30 second segments of each song off his album, "CABARET POLITICO" available for listen (just make sure to pause the myspace player).

Underlying Dream

This is music that Jason of LGDM should probably be reviewing because these guys would have a better chance of a decent review, but since I'm doing the review I guess I need to be honest. I really did not like a single thing about these guys. I've heard this music before on every adult comtemporary, Christian, and Soft Rock radio station I've ever heard. I can't find anything I like about them besides the good guitar work. This is all I have to say about this band.

In this episode you can expect, as usual, some fantastic music, along with Jason and I chatting like idiots. Though I will apologize for the quality of our segments we weren't really prepared for the segments, so they kind of suck.
In this episode we play songs by a Reggae/Punk group from France called Drunksouls; Industrial-Electronica from Vancouver, BC by Mykel Exner; experimental-electronic-indie from Portland band Childhood Friends; California metalcore from Antagonist; Canadian political-metal band Inner Surge; and Grewels, Luxembourg's Inborn.

Drunksouls - Reggae from France?

I found these guys on Jamendo, where I downloaded their whole creative commons licensed cd, "On Verra Plus Tard" (in English: one will see later) for free. The title of the cd should you a clue that they aren't from the States or Canada, but from France.

Drunksouls are a reggae/punk band from France with some really good music. Yes people France has more to offer than just croissants, wine, and cuisine. They have reggae, and good raggae at that. There songs are almost a perfect combination of the Police, Bob Marley, and the Specials, but way better because Sting isn't their vocalist, they never recorded a shitty song called 'Roxanne', the lead singer isn't dead, and their fucking ALBUM IS FREE!!!!!!!!!! My personal favorite songs are 'No More Fighting' and 'Promenons Nous Dans Les Bois' (in English: Let us take a walk in the woods). Do I understand everything they are saying? No, but some of their songs are in English. But if your bilingual in French and English, you'll be able to go to there site and understand it because the English version isn't working.

You need to check out this band, and especially if you like reggae.

Bixby

I was only able to find downloadable song by this band, so I had to sit at their site and listen to the songs over and over to get a feel for them. For my own personal feelings for the bands music I'd have to say that it was so-so. It's not music I'd rush out to buy, or go to see live. The songs are well written, lyrically and musically, with a blues-rock feel, but I just don't feel anything for the songs. If I had to pick a favorite though I'd have to go with "Rag Palace San Francisco", it is by far, in my opinion, their best song.

Divisible

I didn't really hate or love this band, but I did like them and thats odd since I tend not to like bands with female-fronted vocals. I took me a few listens to really get a feel for their music, but it payed off. Divisible plays a blend of goth-rock and indie music, combined beautifully. I could picture this band opening up for Joy Division, or Bauhaus if they both played during the same years. I noticed that the music on their official site isn't as good recording quality as the one on their myspace page, so you might want to listen to the three songs available on myspace.

4 out of 5 stars

Flash Feruccio

Only has three songs available for listen and one of them didn't work time and time again. I wasn't really impressed with the two songs I could listen to, I guess they just seem to generic and I've heard it too many times before. I'm sure there are plenty of people who would enjoy his music, but I'm just not one of them.

Tenki - "On Such A Day"

I decided to review specifically this song by this band, because out of the three songs available for download/listening this is the only good one in my opinion. The other two songs, 'Universe Parts I and II' and 'Etaples' from their 2006 cd "Were Not Talking About the Universe We Are..." aren't necessarily terrible, I just don't like them at all. 'On Such a Day', from their 2000 release "Red Baby", is a fantastic indie-gem with great chord structure, lyrics, hooks, and great vocals. This is a fantastic song I can stress. Beautiful, Beautiful, Beautiful.

The Jawz

Very interesting music too say the least, whether or not its good is the question. The Jawz music is made by connecting a series of vocal noises into beats, and then rapped over. I don't really know whether or not I like it. The music is definately different; maybe I'm just not ready for it. But check it out who knows you may be inspired for better or for worse.

The Down Low

Out of the 3 songs I was able to listen to from this band I only liked one of them, "Haystack". The band is good, but is if for me...no. The music reminds me of the music you'd hear at some community-center music day; where 40-somethings can pretend to still be 'rockin' and 'cool' while their 2 1/4 children run around frantically. I wasn't really down with this band, but hey at least they're creating something, right?

Van Stone

Van Stone have by far the best myspace page and official site. Very funny. They do for the 80's what the Darkness did for the 70's. I really like what they are doing. Guitar Solos, spandex, bad hair, and moustaches...what more could you ask for. Their clothing alone is so 'metal' that Motley Crue, Judas Priest, and the mighty Manowar are shitting themselves. Great music for really bad parties.

With the Iraq war raging on for over the last three years a large amount of money has been required. Many people have probably wondered out loud how much our government could accomplish if it didn't waste it on the Iraq war, but didn't have clue to the extent of the impact. Well, now there is a place where one can get a concrete answer to their question.

National Priorities Project analyzes the cost of the Iraq war and several other of President Bush's policies. Rather than just giving the public a bunch of "dry" numbers, these polls are interactive. So, if you wanted know what would happen if we decided not to go to war and take the money that congress appropriated and improve our nation's health care system, then you would get a very clear prediction.

I tired out one alternative policy. Instead of giving the wealthiest 1% a total tax cut of $56.5 billion, how much affordable housing would be created? Taking the issue more local, I narrowed down to the congressional district where I currently live. Of that tax cut, $121.7 million would create 677 affordable units, supply over 75,000 children with health care, or give 24,000 scholarships for university students. Which is more productive, fighting an unnecessary war, or expanding opportunities for millions of Americans?

What is ironic is that no one would vote for a tax increase if say President Clinton decided to use $311 billion to make health care more affordable?

Futuristic Sex Robotz

Simply put Futuristic Sex Robotz is the greatest band to come out of Seattle since Nirvana, and the greatest rap band ever in the history of the multiverse. I'm totally serious here. If you don't believe me, then you can download their album Hotel Coral Essex for free. This Nerdcore band blew me away, with there hardcore nerd references to everything from the mac os 7.5 to Internet porn to mono chrome screens to 56k modems. Combining deliciously offensive lyrics and real social issues in the nerd community, Futuristic Sex Robotz proves to be lyrical and musical geniuses.These guys are the mother fucking shit, and if you don't agree they'll probably burn you in a van. Right now stop, what your doing and go download the fucking album. It will only take a second or two and then you can go back to the Internet porn while it downloads.

Abbie Hoffman may be dead but his legacy lives on. Steak this Wiki aims to update Hoffmans classic but terribly out dated Steal This Book. I suggest checking it out and contributing. Wiki's are wonderful community creations. I think Abbie Hoffman would have been really impressed and proud. Which is good because i can't think of a lot of other things happening right now that would make any 60's radical happy.

And in somewhat related news, Steal This Film has released a four part documentary covering the issue of file sharing. All those things are true. Except for the part about people reading this blog. The simple truth is no one reads this blog. We don't even read our own blog. But the even sadder fact is that to be totally honest you probably don't have the motivation to create and maintain your own blog. So why not write for us?

Metalocalypse: Dethklok

I have just recently come across a fantastic show called Metalocalypse on Adult Swim. This is a fantastic show created by Brendon Small and Tommy Blacha (the creator of Da Ali G Show) featuring great death metal in a Scandinavian vein. What is even more fantastic is that the fictional band that the show is based on, Dethklok, has their own myspace page with 3 songs available for download. You can listen to a great interview with Brendon Small on the Sound of Young America Podcast.

The Berklee College of Music graduate Brendon Small is not the only one of creators and brainchild of this show but also creates the music. He plays all the instruments, writes all the lyrics, and sings. He has also created the show Home Movies which played on Adult Swim also. Metalocalypse differs from Home Movies very much though....by kicking way more ass. Brendon will even show you how to play the theme song on the guitar.

With guest voices from Metallica, Nevermore, Arch Enemy, King Diamond already recorded and with many others sure to come this show is sure to be a hit with any metalhead with a sense of humor. Though, I'm not positive, but according to this post by 'the band' a full album should also becoming out sooner than later. IGN have already done an interview with the Dethklok. This 'band' is already much better than most of the crap death/black metal has out there right now, and they aren't even a real band.

I urge you to check out this show. At this moment there is nothing else out there like this.

R.U. Sirius, former underground legend seems to be regaining his popularity through a new podcast. R.U. Sirius gained much of his popularity for his writing. He has written hundred of article and several book and was the Editor-In-Chief of GettingIt.com and founder of Mondo 2000. I highly recommend his most resent book Counterculture Through the Ages. His coverage and involvement in counterculture is what has made him "famous." During the 90's when the Internet we all know an love was just being born, Mr. Sirius was one of the most important minds dreaming up the potential of the medium. Unfortunately the Internet started changing and change it did. People got greedy. And everything became about money. Everybody had an IPO. Everybody but Mr. Sirius and that's why for a time he was left behind. And although this article may not be completely accurate, the alcohol is kicking in so I must end the now. Israel Troops Shooting Anti-War Demonstrators

This video clearly show Israeli forces shoot a peaceful protester in the head in the West Bank village of Bil'in. Although it was not a fatal wound, the victim was seriously injured and may never totally recover.

What worries me with his statement is that it appears that he is trying to justify his decision to conduct an illegal war by trying portray himself as a modern day Woodrow Wilson. The core of Wilson’s unpopularity was that he understood the need for there to be an international political body that could avert war, which were outlined in his Fourteen Points. This need for an international community was fostered from destruction of the great world war. There was the realization that war was now possible on a global scale that would create widespread devastation. However, many American at the time didn’t see it that way, since they had no conception to its importance in preventing future wars. This is ironic, since he has promoted and enacted policy that has the objective of the complete opposite. The Iraq war, the recent bloodshed between Israel and Lebanon, and the nomination of John Bolton have done nothing but created a policy of international isolationism.

Flash Fiction

I'm a huge fan of the short story. And I've found quite a few authors publishing their work on the online. Unfortunately, the average short story maybe a bit too long to read on the Internet. Thats where Flash Fiction comes in. Flash Fiction stories are generally less than 2000 words. That means these stories are a super fast read. They usually don't try to tell a whole story, instead they focus on one scene, conversation, or event. Being so short frees the author from the some the contrasts of a normal story and giving the author the flexibility to experiment a lot more than any other format. You see in Flash Fiction there is no time for all the usual character and motive devolpments. Some may see this as a bad thing but I think it sometimes it add a certain something that makes it interesting. You can find a ton on Flash Fiction on the Internet. I highly recommend checking them out. I used to think that most novels should have been short stories but now I think that most novels need to be Flash Fiction. Buts that probably just because most all pop novels are total crap. Da Vinci Code jumps to mind for some reason. I also recommend thinking about using the flash fiction format in you writing. Trying to repeal the “Paris Hilton Tax.”

This is the first installment of a series of articles that will deal with initiatives and candidates in this coming election.

Measure 920:

The republican’s push to repeal the estate tax is not only fought at the federal level, but has made it’s way to the state level. After losing multiple battles in congress, most republicans realize that they couldn't garner enough votes to have it pass, so they have directed their attention to the initiative process in individual states.

Most of the funding is directed by 18 super rich families; one of which is Frank Blethen who owns and operates The Seattle Times. As part of a national campaign, Measure 920 is not in any way a compromise to make the tax fairer to those who might be subjected to it. If that were the case then a proposed compromise in 2000 by the late Senator Paul Wellstone (D-Minnesota), and likely 2008 presidential candidate Senator Russ Feingold (D-Wisconsin) would’ve been enacted. Both of them realizing that the two million dollar limit might have the potential to hurt family farms, they decided to proposal a change in the law to raise the minimum worth of the estate from $2million to $100million; the bill failed to pass by a vote of 56-44.

The main argument that those who want to abolish the tax is that it would hurt family farms. It has manifested into almost a sob story of how the malicious and cold government intrudes into the wishes of a family. In reality, the American Farm Bureau Federation has yet to prove of any family farm that has been overburdened by the tax. They take this misconception even further by advertising it as a “death tax;” which gives the perception in the overall public’s eye that they too are subjected to the tax. Luckily, most people are able to look past the rhetoric, and realize that it would jeopardize the funding to help decrease classroom size in our state’s public schools.

What is frustrating is that this desire to eliminate tax runs counter to the self-identification by conservatives as being the safeguard of rugged individualism. We here at Lawn Gnome Death March see this repeal movement as nothing more then attack by the extremely rich on everyone else. In no way does this tax economically hurt our state, nor is it unfair to the recipients subjected to it. We strongly encourage for a no vote on 920 this coming November election.

The Long Overdue Third Podcast

Yes, finally, we have recorded our third podcast. This would have been the fourth but we lost the disk with the tracks for the last episode, it's a shame because it was really gool. We have been meaning to do another for so long. We hope to have another ten or more podcast before 2007.

Episode Three includes music by The Pubcrawlers, Milk, Ray O'Hara, He's Hers, Mark Silverman, The First Punic War, Chechny and the Rebels, Curiosity, and Should Have Thought of That. Amongst our shit chit-chat we also include small tidbits on web-based comics, our cheap-ass computers, and open-source software. The beer we drank during this show was Pacifico Clara, which taste basically like Corona when you add a slice of lime. And as always the Unofficial Official Beer of Lawn Gnome Death March is good ole PBR, Pabst Blue Ribbon.

Guy Michetti

NYC alt-country musician who writes well crafted and structured music in the vein of Ryan Adams, and Bruce Springsteen. He currently has two cds available for purchase: "All In My Mind" and "Headin' For The Crossroads". I was able to listen to about four or five songs from each album and every song is quite enjoyable. My favorite songs from what I listen too were "Dont Learn War" and "On the Steps of St. Josephs". This is a working man and womens music; and you'd expect to see him on VH1 Storytellers. I also feel a bit of the newer Tom Waits cds, maybe you'll be able to hear it too. And unlike a lot of bands Mr. Michetti has quite a bit of his songs available for download and/or listen.

He's Hers

A true Hip-Hop artist! Whether handling the mic or controlling the mixing boards. He's Hers is Chris Brown; an emcee and producer from Irvine, CA (I'm necessarily sure of this). On his site he has over thirty mp3s available for download most of them without vocals. I think that if he were smart he would copyright those without vocals with the Creative Commons Copyright, that way other emcees could use his beats and still have to give him credit where its due. In my opinion Chris Brown is doing a much better job than other emcee/producers KanYe West, NERD, etc. His music is very original, i've never really heard any other rap/hip-hop beats like these before. His rhymes also flow very well, it almost seems effortless. We will be hearing much more of him in the upcoming years. Checkout "Vanity Press", "Today", and "You Are There".

Dawn Xiana Moon

I was able to listen to 4 songs by Ms. Moon including "Freedom", "Self-Destructive (If I Ran Away)", "Unyielding (Song of Songs), and "Walkaway". I was almost hit with a feeling of Deja Vu. I have spent many evenings relaxing (or crying during my worst) to Sarah McLachlan, but I did eventually get tired of her. I like Sarah McLachlan, but I'm just tired of her music. So I guess in a way I'm tired of that sound, which this music is. Her vocals are really good, the music is well composed, and the lyrics are McLachlan-esque, but there is just something about her music that highly annoys me but i just can't put my finger on it. If I heard this music 7 years ago while I lived in Buffalo, NY, when I had my tickets to Lilith Fair in my hand I would have probably loved it, but alas this is 2006 and not 1999.

The First Punic War: Unicorn EP

The First Punic War is not only first of three battles fought between Carthage and Rome, but a band. And just like these wars, the band rides huge fucking elephants into battle. If this band had led Carthage instead of Hannibal maybe the Roman Empire would have never existed and Africa would be the center of the modern world as opposed to Europe.

The First Punic War is the vision of performer J. Warden who started the band in 1998, and has recorded five albums since; Unicorn is the one I am going to review.

Though only an EP, Unicorn (released on failURE RecOrds), has 3 highly unique, modern, fast-paced, and even slightly primative songs. "Unicorn" has pace filled-in with reckless abandon; "Simon the Sailor" kind of scares me; and "Punk Rock" is an hardcore electronic gem. This music could and will be legendary, and I highly expect this music to become a cult phenomenon, among true music afficinados; kind of like Weezers "Pinkerton" to the emo-kids.

I honestly cannot think of another band who really compares to them; Akimbo, the Bronx, Ninety Pound-Wuss come to mind but, this is a true indie treasure, those other bands, though good, can't compare. You should really take a listen to this disk, or better yet buy it. This is real balls-out music, with no apologies, and no remorse. It's about fucking time.

Wookie Pussy - Sexy Bitches

Unlike their name most of the songs from "Wookie Pussy" are forgettable. There is one brilliant exception. That is the song "Sexy Bitches". Words can not effectively describe this song, so I'm not even going to try. What I can say, is that everyone at LGDM loves this song. We have been playing this song inside the LGDM offices, everyday nonstop for a week . This song is crack. You know you shouldn't really be enjoying it, but damn its so fuckin good.

Geoff Antonio & the iLL fUNK nATION

Hip-Hop? Funk? Latin? Call it what you will, but the Ill Funk Nation is making some good music. No, I am not the biggest hip-hop/rap fan, but I can recognize good shit, and well This is some good shit. Reminiscent of Ozomatli's "Street Signs" What separates this group from other hip-hop groups is its use of intelligent lyrics with and actual fucking band. Yes, they play their own music. On the bands site they list their sound as "Total Original Sound", and while lots of bands say this hardly any of them follow through with it, but Geoff Antonio & the Ill Funk Nation do it. Now if only they actually had their songs on myspace available for download as opposed to just being able to listen to them. Check them out and hand them some support.

I am happy to have recieved an email from this band. Fantastic music hailing from Chicago, Illinois. No, they are not available for download but you can still give them a listen. Labeling themselves as rock, experimental, and ambient; they live up to it. You know, unlike the bands that list themselves and a punkband but only have one punk song in their whole fucking catalog. Their song "Hut Hut Hut" kind of reminds me of Tool, while "Parasitic Twin", in my opinion, is an instrumental masterpiece. I could hear Maynards howls deep within their music, even without any vocals. Lorus is ART

Steve Taylor

Folk music from Berkeley, CA....well isn't that unheard of. Okay, Mr. Taylor isn't that bad. He is a good guitarist, and his lyrics are typically poetic like most folk musicians. Now, just so you know I don't hate Folk but it's just that it seems very hard to come across original folk. Well, I really don't know what to say. He only has two songs available for play/download, so maybe I just don't have enough to create an intelligent analysis of his music. But, alas, if you do thoroughly enjoy folk/acoustic music check him out.

Tommy Dynamite and the Blastingcaps

Well, like Folk music, Blues is really hard to find originality. Okay, here is where my bias comes in, I like the blues. I love the way you unconsciously start to bob your head to the music, the blunt but good lyrics. Blues is music that almost anybody can understand. Shit, this is the roots of rock and rap. The blues demand respect. TDBC has 3 pretty good songs available for listen and download, and each one is quality. I'd say my personal favorite out of the three is "Say Goodbye to the Blues" but "I'm a Bluesman" is good too with its self-depricating lyrics. This music makes me want to sit in a smoke-filled bar with a glass of cheap whiskey.

Gunter

I like this guy. If he had all his music available I'd listen to it alot more though. Gunter primarily plays folk / acoustic music, but with his lyrics being so well written without being seemingly forcefully poetic like a lot of folk musicians. He doesn't limit himself to just folk though, his album also contains alt-country, experimental, rock, indie sound. Gunter seems to take more blues sensibility within his music; meaning he seems to actually have some fun making it. This is an album that you could sit and chill too. I would love to play his music on our podcast but none of it is downloadable. But, Gunter is still a smart man, he lets you listen to his whole album for free. I cannot stress how good Gunter is.

The Pubcrawlers

Our player is always playing random songs varying in quality (shit..good...fantastic). So after ten to twenty shit songs a song called "the Last Saskatchewan Pirate" played; I was instantly elated, quality at last. When I realized that I had five other songs by the same band of course I checked them out also. I was overjoyed. It's always great when you discover a band that you've never heard before, and especially when they're really, really good. The Pubcrawlers are just that, and are now being played constantly in my apartment, especially when drinking is occuring which is often.The Pubcrawlers are a Celtic influenced punk-band who have definitely similarities with the Dropkick Murphy's, The Pogue's, The Real McKenzie's, Flogging Molly, and The Business. From what I've noticed most people either hate Celtic-Punk or they absolutely love it; I happen to be one of the latter. To me Celtic-Punk is symbolic of the working class, class struggle, and of course having a good time. This symbolism is prevalent in the Pubcrawlers music. They're able to write songs that each have a different feel to them, which I appreciate. If you like the Dropkick Murphy's, the Real McKenzie's, Flogging Molly, the Business, and the Pogue's you will love the Pubcrawlers; but although you can throw them in the Celtic-Punk genre you will find that this band actually has their own sound. This is a band I wish would play in the Seattle area; Shit, if I had a bigger apartment I put them up for a night or two. God-damn, they've played in the UK in the Holidays in the Sun Festival with the greats and legends of punk, but they can't get out here to play a show. A message to Northwest venues GIVE THESE GUYS A SHOW OUT HERE!!!!!!!!!!! This is a band worthy of having me wear their t-shirt, shit this is a band that deserves everybody wearing their t-shirts, in fact I'm gonna order one with my next check. We need more bands like this, bands that play great fucking music, bands with an ounce of originality, bands that perfectly accentuate a pint of Guinness, bands that deserve to have their t-shirt worn.

We try to focus on independent content. The kind of stuff created by seemingly average people. There is a ton of really good independently produced creative content available on the the Internet. The trouble is, finding the stuff that is really good. Our plan is to be a kind Internet filter. We search the world from our living rooms for the creative gold of the Internet. Then tell you about it and what we think we think of it. LGDM is constantly evolving. We do not have any hard definitions. The terms “underground” and “independent” are used very loosely. We don't have any limits on the kind of “content” we are covering. We'll cover anything from music to visual arts to individual web sites. We'll even cover people if they are interesting enough. We also want to help and encourage people to be more creative or better yet to start being creative. We live in an amazing time where anyone can create almost anything that can be seen and enjoyed by everyone. And we want to help.

Well according to reports MTV turns 25 today. 25 years old and growing more and more irrelevant everyday. Even MTV2 which used to feature a lot very good videos has adopted the practice of replacing music videos with shitty "reality" TV shows. The idea that someone would actually tune into "music TV" for music is so stupid its almost awesome. But not quite.
There was a time when I really enjoyed MTV2. I kind of miss music videos. So I started looking around the tubes of the Internets for sources of music videos. Some of the ones I would recommend if you are craving vids would be google video's music videos, BlankTV, PunkRockVids, purevolume, and maybe imvf. YouTube has alot of vids too but most are crap fan created ones. Just google music videos for more sites. (like you would never have thought of that right) During my explorations I found this little gem from the "hoff" himself, and this one from Americas favorite millionaire anorexic whore.

Jason's Guide to Promoting Your Band on the Internet

First of all, I'm no band promoter. These are just some ideas that I think make sense. If they make sense to you please use them.

Get a web site. Sure myspace can be a great resource for your band, but it probably should not be your main site. I suggest having a myspce presence for the simple fact that it is so freaking popular. Start a band blog on a service like blogger.com. Blogger is simple, clean, and free. And it is not owned by a certain Australian "gentleman". With your new blog you can keep all those interested, or potentially interested up to date with the latest band news and photos.

Don't waste you money or time on making a super fancy web site. The fact is, no one cares how cool your site looks. People care about the music. Its about content. No amount of flash will make your music suck less. (if it sucks) And no one really thinks a fancy web site means professional, despite what some web designer might say. In my experience going to hundreds of band site, I have found that some people appear to have alot more money than talent. Remember to keep it clean and simple. When some one comes to your site, it is your chance to sell them on you. Do it on merit. Its the only way it really works. Tell them who you are, what you are doing, and then hand them some music. They will love you for it.

Just in case you don't already know, CafePress. This guys will make t-shirts, hats, mugs, or whatever even underware with your band's logo or images. There is no fee for it too. You get money as you sell your merch. Of course I would recommend setting the price as cheaply as possible. You should want as many people running around with your bands shirt on as possible. You can't buy that kind of advertising. CafePress also will make CD's for you in the same way so check them out. Also CD Baby will sell cds for you and will not charge hundreds of dollars to do it.

Make all you song available for download for free. Most small bands give away most their cds anyway, so why are you not giving away you mp3s too? There are some great sites that will host your mp3 for free too, so it will cost you nothing. Sites GarageBand

You've probably sent your cds to radio station, but have you sent them to podcasters. There are a ton of podcasts that specialize in playing independent music. Just like LGDM. Go to these sites and find the music podcasts and then send them you music. Be proactive.

Promote and protect your music online and offline by using a creative commons license.

Get some kind of online show calender. That way people can plan on seeing your band live. The very best one I have found is google's. It is the one we use here at LGDM. Not only can you publicly post your coming shows, but you can use google maps to give people directions. Now that is cool. You can also export the calender to an ical file. What is an ical file? It is simple a little file for importing and exporting calenders. Instead of giving someone a long list of upcoming shows, all you have to do is give them the file and it can be imported by any decent caleder program or calender service. If you send me an ical file I will put all your upcoming shows on the LGDM concert calender with a single click.

Bust out that old camcorder and make a music video. Put it on the computer and upload it to youtube, google, and anywhere else you can. You don't need a big budget. You might not even need a budget at all. Just be creative, and people will watch. If you don't believe me check out the top viewed videos and then tell me you can not do better then that crap.

Seattle Sonics Sold!! Thank God!!!

The Seattle Sonics, along with the WNBA Seattle Storm, have been sold to an Oklahoma based group, making the move to Oklahoma City, OK inevitable. Though some are heart broken, I know very well that many others (including myself and the Lawn Gnome Death March staff) are fine with this, and in some case happy as hell about it.

Howard Schultz and the other owners of the Sonics have been the main deterrent for the NHL to start a expansion team in Seattle. With the team moving it leaves Key Arena open for business. I can only hope that the city will finance the little bit of money needed to allow the transition of Key Arena to a top NHL Arena. I, myself, am hoping to god that this happens. Seattle does have a good youth hockey program and the area also includes two teams in the Western Hockey League, including the Seattle Thunderbirds, and the Everett Silvertips. With an NHL team here imagine the fucking rivalry between the Seattle team and the Vancouver Canucks. Other possible rivals would include the Edmonton Oilers, the Calgary Flames, the San Jose Sharks, the L.A. Kings, and the Colorado Avalanche.

The rivalries would be fucking intense, and though the team would probably take a few years to become a real contender in anyway I believe hockey would do very well here. Lets just give it a chance.

I've discovered a great blog, from a man in Lebanon. He discribes what it is like in his country with all the violence. Please visit his site and read it, and get a different view of this conflict involving Israel (hand in hand with the US) and Lebanon. Do it before he himself is bombed, which seems bound to happen with Israel unwilling to cease fire. With them unwilling to cease fire, why would the Lebanese cease fire. To me this seems like an obvious Anti-Arab/Muslim attack. The only way the US will get involved in this is to help the Israeli state, or to blatently join them in attacking those them A-rabs.

Its been called one of the best kept secrets in Washington. It sits out in eastern Washington inside of the Yakima Training Center. Don't bother going to the web site, you'll find no mention of it. As a matter of fact you'll find very little official information on it at all. Locals apparently call it the "ball bering plant". It is the Yakima NSA Echelon Facility and it is part of the Echelon network. It is one of two major NSA echelon bases in the continuous United States. The other is in Sugar Grove, VA. There are alot of stories about what Echelon does. There alot of web sites devoted to the conspiracy theories out there like this one. You can check them out if you have some time to blow. The fact is that no one outside the program really knows what is going on. What we do know though is it is ran by the NSA, and the NSA's job is to spy on people. The NSA spies on people at this base with huge radio dishes. How huge? Freaking huge huge. Check out the pictures or this google map. We can only imagine what information they are after, but from some accounts all the info is ran though computer called "COWBOY". The computer searches for keywords and flags certain messages to be send out to NSA headquarters for further analysis.

New Tool Single Played In Seattle

Rabid Tool fans around the Seattle area got their first taste of the new tool album today. The single 'Vicarious', for there album "10,000 Days" was released and played by radio stations across the country. Security around the CD has been tight As far as i know it has not made its way to the P2P sites, yet. So this was my first time hearing it myself. I actually sat through the reliably horrible BJ shay morning show on KISW just to hear it as soon as possible. After shamelessly bating people for an hour they finally played it. The song was typical tool, with one major exception. Maynard. The legendary front man seems diminutive in this song. Only towards the end of the song does he begin to emerge. That is when the song really begins to rock. Their harder side seems to be coming out in this song. My only complaint about their last album was (with two notable exceptions) that is was too "soft". This new single makes me excited to hear a harder album. Tool will be playing the paramount on May 2 the same day there CD "10,000 Days" comes out.

First Demo Recording Sessions

The Vaccines, out of the Portland, OR area; have written some really great and enjoyable music which could accompany any 80's John Hughes film or become the perfect background music for any stoner party. The songs have everything a good song should have: a great melody, good lyrics, and a nice hook. My personal favorites would have to be "Mt. Vernon" which is by far their 'hard' song, "Safer In The Sun, pt 2" which is the most fun and reminds me of Steve Miller Band a bit, there is also the track "Keep Me Late." Listening to it made me want to just make sweet spooning love all night....really it did. Though I was never able to actually hear any of their actual CD's, listening only to the tracks on their site; if I had to give them an overall sound I would have to say Country-Rock. This is actually a good genre if you give it a chance (Don't Be Afraid Of The Country Part); Old 97s were country-rock and so was Ryan Adams while in Whiskeytown.

In the end I give them 3 1/2 Stars (out of 5)

Well the FIFA World Cup kicks off in Germany on June 9th with Germany facing off against Costa Rica in Munich. Other venues across Germany will be hosting games.

For those of you who don't understand how the World Cup works, or how teams are choosen heres an article I found that explains. It's a little old but it still works out the same.

The 5th in the World Ranked US Mens team will take to the pitch on June 12th against 2nd in the World Ranked Czech Republic in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.

Most Americans views soccer as just a sport played amongst grade-schoolers during the summer but throughout the rest of the world it is known as football and is the national sport. The World Cup is the biggest sporting event in the world; no, not even the Summer Olympics are bigger. Here is an overview on who's in what group and their world rankings in (#):
Group A: Germany(22), Costa Rica(25), Poland(26), Ecuador(38)
Group B: England(9), Sweden(16), Paraguay(33), Trinidad and Tobago(49)
Group C: Argentina(4), Serbia and Montenegro(46), Netherlands(3), Côte d'Ivoire(32) (aka Ivory Coast)
Group D: Mexico(7). Portugal(10), Angola(60), Iran(19)
Group E: Italy(12), Ghana(50), USA(5), Czech Republic(2)
Group F: Brazil(1), Croatia(19), Japan(18), Australia(44)
Group G: France(8), Switzerland(35), Korea Republic(31), Togo(58)
Group H: Saudi Arabia(34), Tunisia(24), Spain(6), Ukraine(42)

Now if you've read the article I linked to about how the World Cup Works you will know that that every team in a group will play each other once. Recieving 3pts for a win, 1 for a draw (tie), and 0 for a loss. The top 2 teams from each group go on to the Round of 16. I have looked at the groups and have attempted to predict the top 2 teams of every group (I would not bet $ on this).

Here are my predictions:
Group A: Germany will take top spot, followed by Poland whose only loss will come from the German side.

Group B: Even with England in a current coaching fiasco I believe they will go on along with Sweden

Group C: Argentina will destroy the other three teams and will definately advance. I think that Côte d'Ivoire will be underestimated and will advance along side Argentina, but I think that it will be close with Netherlands and Côte d'Ivoire being separated by a mere point.

Group D: No contest here Mexico, and Portugal will advance with either one of them possessing the top spot

Group E: Now this has to be the toughest group this year! And I can't wait to see how it turns out. 2nd ranked Czech Republic will definately take this group. The real battle I believe will be between the tough Italy and US teams. Now its hard not to be biased here being an American myself, but I do think that they (the US team) will take it and advance along with Czech Republic.

Group F: Brazil, like Argentina, will dominate this group; so the real challenge here is for second. I, believe the Australians could surprise the world, and they will; but I don't think they will advance. Croatia will put up a real battle, but I believe Japan will come out on top. So my picks Brazil and Japan.

Group G: France and Switzerland will pretty much own this group with France taking top honors and Switzerland following in a close second. Korea Republic will follow closely behind Switzerland, and will give them a hardtime.

Group H: Spain will go undefeated and take top honors in this group. Now the battle for second will be the real thing. Now I think Saudi Arabia will go on to the next round, but their gonna have a hell of a time getting there with Tunisia, and Ukraine in their way. I think Saudi Arabia will come out victorious but barely.

Okay there are my predictions for the group stages. Now if everything works out the way I predicted, the round of 16 is gonna be amazing, with some great matches to be had, for instance: Germany vs. England; Argentina vs. Portugal; Sweden vs. Poland, and especially USA vs. Brazil (definately a David v. Goliath game). Now making predictions at this stage gets really difficult and nerve-racking, but heres my take:

England take out Germany to face Argentina who will beat Portugal. England will then surprise Argentina and go on to the Semi-Finals

Czech Rep take out Japan to face France who will beat Saudi Arabia. Czech Rep will beat France To face England in the Semi Finals

England will beat Czech Republic to go on to the finals

Poland will beat Sweden to face Mexico who will beat Serbia & Montenegro. Mexico will then destroy Poland to go to the Semi-Finals

Brazil narrowly beat USA to face Spain who also narrowly beats Switzerland. Brazil will again narrowly beat Spain to go to Semi-Finals vs Mexico.

Mexico will beat Brazil by 2 goals to go on to the Finals vs England

This leaves Mexico vs England in the Finals. My predictions are that Wayne Rooney gets 2 goals, along with one from Steven Gerrard. Mexico will still manage to achieve victory with overall better saves. Prediction Mexico 4 - England 3

We, or at least myself, would only perfer stories relating to local sports and even more specifically soccer, rugby, hockey, and cricket. Occasionally, I will put something relating to football, baseball, or basketball, but since these sports sort of suck, they will most likely not get as much coverage.
